For those who does not know what is a keloid? It is the abnormal excess production of collagen which occurs when your skin repairs itself when you are bruised. It occurs when you are badly injured but not every person's wound will grow into a keloid. So i heard that if i undergo a surgery there is a chance that it will grow back even bigger. I definitely would not take a chance. Steroid injection into keloid help for some people but it is very painful. The Keloid is swollen and pains like hell which is what i heard. So, i searched for home remedies instead. I found so many. I somehow chose iodine after reading many positive reviews on it. I decided to give it a try. Does it hurt?? HELL yes it does.. but its not expensive. I know i am crazy but i like doing stuffs myself rather than paying big money for someone who would do the same thing the same way i did. i usually spread a thin layer of cotton on it and apply iodine with the dropper. The reason is so that the iodine is absorbed into the keloid because it is liquid, Painting it with the iodine will work probably but will take a lot of time for you to see any results. I have been doing it for a year now. i did see some improvements. But if i applied religiously.. i probably would have had better results. i totally skipped days sometimes months.. it is in a place where it is very visible so you would to be careful. You can always put a medical tape on it. All depends on how comfortable you are with it.
Well, first let me explain to you what happen when you apply the iodine. The keloid gets dark and swollen. It does look bad but don't freak out. The skin on it will come out. It will be pinkish and softer. It will be sensitive but wait for a couple of days and then do the same procedure again. Basically what you are doing is, you are peeling it. And you should be asking why iodine and not acids like glycolic, or others available at the saloon. Because keloid is grown when you have a deficiency of iodine in your body. If you do some research you will find it. Some people take iodine orally but it is not advisable unless recommended by your doctor. I would rather put the iodine on my skin rather than distributing it in my whole body.
But yes this thing works if you are really want to get rid of that ugly keloid and not spend too much money.
I bought a derma roller as i mention in my previous post about fake rollers. I tried it on the keloid. I feel like its working. I was very aggressive with it because my derma roller is not a good one as i mentioned. but i injured the keloid and it peeled off and it seems to be a bit flatter now. However, i cant say much, i am waiting for my other derma roller to come so i can tell you if its really working or not.
The pictures below shows my keloid after approximately 9 months of applying iodine. I think there has been great improvements. I will stick with the roller now and see if it works better than iodine. You will see on my picture on one side its dark as it was more raised and i injured it so it will peel off. it seems flatter but has not peel off yet.. i will keep updating you about it.. i know the keloid looks larger in the recent picture but believe me it is flatter that the one on t
he left side.

This picture is from 2009, and that is how my keloid used to look like before any treatment with iodine. May be pictures do not really show big difference between the before and after pic but it has really shrank. i think may it would been smaller if i was not lazy and would apply it religiously. but well i am happy that it went down and now i can actually conceal it with foundation.
I have a chest keloid in the exact same spot, and same size as well! What exact iodine product did you use and how long/often did you apply it for?
ReplyDeleteI used a 5% lugol's solution of iodine. check the link i will be posting below. i bought it from ebay. i was not regular at all in my application because when u apply it, it get swollen, and become dark but that is just because of the colour of the iodine. It may be a little painful after you apply it and itchy as well because of the swelling but make sure you do not let it get into contact with your normal skin. It will leave scars on normal skin. I mean normally it will get into contact when u apply on the keloid because its a liquid, it will spread around it. Since the keloid is an abnormal production of collagen, upon application and after it dries out after 3-4days or may take long, a plastic like layer of the keloid will come out. Its basically dead skin. You will notice it smoother and flatter. If you want faster results, as soon as it peels and heals, apply it. Do not apply when it is tender or do not peel the skin yourself. let it come off naturally. You cannot do that daily but atleast every week. if i was doing every week, i would probably have had better results. But the fact that i had to wear band aid on it everyday, i was sometimes lazy to do it. But i am going to do it regularly now. I thought of doing the microneedling on it but i still have not got my numbing cream. Here's the link from where i bought it.. you can try others if you see on ebay but do not take lower than 5% iodine solution. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Lugols-solution-1-fluid-ounce-5-iodine-/280842147296?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41637f15e0
DeleteI can make a video on how to apply it if you are not sure.. let me know.. i hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any questions that you have.
DeleteHi PoojG,
DeleteIs there any latest picture of your Keloid scar? Any improvement? I was thinking of ordering J Crow 5% Iodine solution as the one suggested above was delisted on ebay.
Your responses will help many others.
Thank you!
I forgot to add something, apply it at night so that you will not feel any discomfort because you will be sleeping. When you wake up, apply an ointment on it.. i apply polysporin for it heal faster and also it has vitamin E in it which will keep your skin moisturised.
ReplyDeleteHello I have keloid too. I have just found your blog and very interested to see an update on your treatment. Please keep posting! Here's my keloid photo
Deletehttp://keloiddiary.blogspot.com/
hi.. i am sorry for not updating my blog.. i have been busy with school.. and so i just random did one or two treatment of my keloid. i didnt do microneedling.. i preferred the iodine because it is mostly like to cure it than anything else. As you know already, keloid develop because of the deficiency of iodine. I believe iodine will provide a faster cure.. my keloid does look smaller now even though i only applied iodine 2 3 times since i posted this blog. And to be frank, i dont hide it anymore. it is something i have to live with, if it does not go.. so i just go bareneck, no adhesive bandages to hide it anymore.. people ask me a lot of time what it is and i tell them.. but yes if you feel embarassed with it, i would say do your treatment regularly.. you can read my post somewhere where i talk about how i apply the iodine.. it gets painfull, but bear with it.. its totally worth it.. i am going to post a recent pic just to give kind of an update how it looks right now..Best of luck.. hope you also get good results..:)
DeleteHi friend. I have keloid on my chest, both of my back shoulders and a little on my upper arm. Have you tried puncturing the keloid with a needle? For me, it seems to help reduce the size of my keloid and also turn them back to their natural color...sometimes the keloids become completely flat! I only do it once every couple months because they really hurt and the skin probably needs a little time to heal. I will have to look into getting numbing creams because certain spots like the chest can really hurt.
ReplyDeleteHi how should the derma roller be used. Do u have to apply an ointment or something before using it on your skin.
ReplyDelete@ kevin. I should try that. But that will hurt like hell, i pretty suree.. I have not been doing anything to the keloid for so long, been busy with studies..
ReplyDelete@ nadia. You need to apply a numbing cream on it. I didnt apply t numbing cream but i would suggest you apply it. They can be pricey but well its worth it unless you can bear the pain. I think i am going to try it today n i will get back to you a week from now. I have not done anything on it for so long. I'll post the before and after pic. Please send your pic, i really helps to know what worked and what didn't since we all have different type of skins.
Hi poojg... did you start using the derma roller ? Did u notice any results. . By the way I would like to know what size of the derma roller needle is good to use on the face for acne scar
ReplyDeletehey nadia. it tried the derma roller but since it was painfull, i did not do it again. I have kept applying the iodine. i will post a pic after my skin peel off.. i think my scar got flatter. i have also applied glycolic acid to it so that it peels the skin off. because i was running out of iodine. i will post the results soon.
Deletehello poojg, your blog is really interesting i have a worm keloid on my chest too and i am presently using iodine.it seems to be working.i also apply when the skin.is tender it seems to penetrate more.since the skin is soft and tender.does not really hurt much except if you play with it or scratch and bruise it.how is your own treatment going?
ReplyDeleteThank you Yasmine. :). i think mine has got a lot smaller even though i was not regular with my treatment. i ran out of iodine. i need to order more. i am using glycolic acid which i bought for my face on it, it does peel off, but i think iodine is more intense . Mine does not hurt either unless i bruise it or something or when i apply the iodine. Otherwise i think its getting smaller. i am wondering if the pigmentation will go away if it gets flat. The outer parts are flat already but it is still dark brownish which gives the impression that it is large. When i go out i apply foundation to it and seal it with powder so its not as noticeable. Anyway, Best of luck with your treatment. :)
DeleteHey Poojg,
ReplyDeleteI'm going through the same situation as you as well. Though I've been applying iodine and DMSO which makes iodine penetrate faster. The keloid has shrunk a lot! Keep up the work :)
- Leena
that is great. can you post your results? do you have it on the same area as mine. where did you purchase the DMSO?
DeleteHi PoojG, thanks for your posting. How is the keloid looking now with potassium iodide treatment now? Does it keep shrinking and flattening? Did you keep some measurement of the size?

ReplyDeleteHi PoojG,
ReplyDeleteHope you're well and safe in this pandemic climate?
Just wanted to see if you have any further updates for us? I understand you were trying to get a second bottle of Lugol's so did you manage to and have you seen more improvement to your scar?
I have a keloid in the same area, probably 3-4 years old, and seems to be growing more rapidly so would like to try iodine myself.
Cheers,
Theresa
